Title
Austin Park Pickleball and Basketball Court Replacements
Background
The basketball and tennis courts at Austin Park were originally constructed in 1987 as part of a park expansion. In 2015 both courts were resurfaced. Since 2015 the courts have cracked severely from tree roots pushing up the asphalt. The attached plans for the conversion to pickleball courts would move the new courts farther to the west to get away from the existing tree roots.
WSB and Associates, the consultant on the project, has submitted plans and specifications for the council to review and discuss. Staff will present a copy of WSB’s work on this at the meeting.
Board/Commission Review
This project was approved in the 2020 Park and Trail Capital Improvement Fund budget. The Parks and Trail Capital Improvement Fund has $100,000 appropriated for the Austin Court improvements. WSB’s current estimate is $127,125. The fund also has $100,000 in improvements appropriated for Territorial Park in 2021. Territorial park courts are in much better condition than Austin’s courts. Therefore, staff is recommending an amendment to the Parks and Trails Fund CIP to hold off on the Territorial project this year and shift the appropriation for Territorial Park to the Austin Park project. The Park Board recommended this at their April 27, 2021 board meeting
Staff Recommendation
Staff is requesting authorization to move forward and seek bids for the construction of the Austin Park basketball and pickleball courts.
