REVIEW THE CITY’S MISSION STATEMENT

Background

Based on council direction at the January 22 council workshop, staff has made some suggested revisions to the city’s mission and vision statements.

History

The city first adopted a mission statement in 1985. There have been several revisions over the years and our current one is attached to this item. Per Resolution No. 86-41, the City is required to annually adopt a mission statement.

During the strategic planning discussions in 2019, City Council reviewed the current Mission Statement, and discussed vision and values statements.  It was agreed that the mission, vision and values statements needed updating and/or creation.  A brainstorming process resulted in the identification of key concepts the group favored for both the vision and mission.  These were then used by the consultant to create draft statements.  The City Council also identified a potential list of values, which the consultant used to prepare a draft set of values for consideration.

Following the workshop discussion, staff made some proposed modifications to the Mission and Values (see below); work continues on the Vision Statement. The proposed mission and value statements are listed below:

Our Mission

Current:

Our mission is to maintain, and continually improve the City of Blaine. We accomplish this by delivering good-value public services with the highest degree of professionalism.

Current:

Current:

Accountability - for our actions and to the public

Suggested:

Current:

Suggested:

Providing Value - being responsible stewards of community resources

The approval of mission, vision, and value statements is the final major step necessary in order to move forward with approval of the 2019-2022 Strategic Plan.  Staff will bring a proposed Vision Statement forward at a future workshop or the Council retreat.

Recommendation

Discuss the proposed statements.  If consensus is reached, the statements will be incorporated into the Strategic Plan document, which will then be brought to a City Council meeting for formal approval.
