AUTHORIZE PURCHASE OF ROAD CHEMICALS FOR 2020 IN AN AMOUNT UP TO $311,360.00
Background
Each year the City orders road salt (sodium chloride) from the State of Minnesota Cooperative Purchasing program. Compass Minerals was the successful bidder for the State contract this year. The road salt is used to treat our streets to minimize the amount of ice and snow on the roadways to make them safe for travel by the public.
The 2020 price for road salt is $77.84 per ton. This is 19.6% higher than last year reflecting the impact of winter weather last spring. Staff is recommending approval to order up to 4,000 tons of road salt (same amount as the last several years) at a cost up to $311,360.00. Sufficient funds have been appropriated in the 2020 budget for this expenditure.
The city has the option to increase or decrease our purchase volume by up to 20% while maintaining this price.
Recommendation
By motion, authorize the purchase of up to 4,000 tons of road salt (sodium chloride) from the State of Minnesota Purchasing program in the amount not to exceed $311,360.00.
