REVIEW OF TRAFFIC DATA ON WEST I35W SERVICE DRIVE
Background
The Traffic Commission discussed at their April 2nd meeting the request to review the Speed of traffic on the West I35W service Drive between 85th Avenue and 95th Avenue. The Commission directed staff to collect data on the corridor and report back.
Staff was able to collect data on the corridor. Engineering staff placed tube counters at 9020 35W Service Drive from April 16-18. The tube data shows the 85% speed was 54mph in both the north and south directions. The tube data also indicated that the volume of traffic is approximately 3,250 vehicles per day. The Police Department also deployed the Jamar device on March 18-22 and the data collected showed that the 85% speed was 55mph in both directions.
Staff also reviewed the existing signage along this corridor and made note the southbound traffic does not have a speed limit sign indicating the 50 mph limit.
Recommendation
Staff is recommending that the commission recommend the installation of a speed limit sign installed for the south bound traffic and that the Police Department place this corridor on the patrol list to see if additional education and enforcement will impact the speeds within the corridor.
