CONSENT AGENDA - Jim Hafner, Stormwater Manager
Title
AUTHORIZING PAYMENT IN THE AMOUNT OF $22,314.88 TO JULIAN M. JOHNSON CONSTRUCTION CORP. FOR EMERGENCY REPAIR ON 89TH AVENUE AND COUNTY DITCH 17
Background
Engineering had been planning an improvement project for the culvert conveying County Ditch 17 under 89th Avenue. Several changes were needed and the work was being scheduled for 2017. However, heavy rains saturating soils, compounded by what turned out to be a failure of a tributary culvert, resulted in a collapse of the ditch banks around the main culvert on the upstream (north) side of 89th Avenue. In order to protect public safety and prevent potential damage to the semaphore on 89th Avenue, staff obtained authorization from the City Manager to obtain quotes to perform an emergency repair at the site.
Six contractors were called and only one had the time and available materials to mobilize quickly and perform the needed repairs. Julian Johnson Construction indicated they could move quickly and recommended a method that would provide a stable, long lasting solution. Their quote was $27,000 but indicated the total cost would likely be less. The final invoice came in at $22,314.88.
Recommendation
By motion, approve the payment in the amount of $22,314.88 to Julian M. Johnson Construction Corp. for Emergency Repair on 89th Avenue and County Ditch 17.
