Title
ENTER INTO A CONTRACT WITH UTIILITY SERVICE CO., INC. FOR CLEANING WATER MAINS OVER A 5-YEAR PERIOD IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $500,000
Background
The Utilities Department is looking to do some preventive maintenance on our older water lines to extend their useful life. The process that is being proposed is called “Ice Pigging” where a slurry of ice and water is pushed through the water main scouring the deposits and build-up on the interior of the water main and then flushing it out through our hydrants.
This is an alternative way of cleaning the water mains that does not require digging down to the water main and cutting into it to run a cleaning “pig” through the line. Ice Pigging is less intrusive and less expensive than traditional cleaning methods.
The contract is for five years at $100,000 per year and the amount of water main cleaned will vary based on the size of pipe and the type of pipe. Funds have been budgeted in the water fund for this project.
Recommendation
Authorize Mayor and City Manager to enter contract with Utility Service Co., Inc. in the amount of $500,000 over a five year period.
