PAYMENT TO THE LEAGUE OF MINNESOTA CITIES
Background
The Minnesota League of Cities, our liability insurance provider, is recommending we accept a settlement in a K9 case from 2014. The rationale includes a risk assessment for losing a jury trial and incurring additional legal expenses. While the police followed all procedures and policies in the case, we recognize this is a business decision to settle and not incur additional costs. If approved, Blaine’s self-insurance fund will cover the $100,000 settlement, which is within the deductible of our insurance policy. Of that amount, $80,000 is legal fees for defending the city.
Recommendation
By Motion, City Council to approve the payment to the LMC.
