Title
APPROVAL OF DONATION TO SPRING LAKE PARK-BLAINE-MOUNDS VIEW FIRE DEPARTMENT FOR FIREWORKS
Background
The City has worked with the non-profit organization Poseidon Sea Cadets to provide fireworks on the 4th of July since 2013, and the Council appropriates funds from the Charitable Gambling account for this purpose. The Poseidon Sea Cadets have indicated they can no longer be the non-profit funding the fireworks. Recreation staff is recommending the selection of the Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View Fire Department as the 2015 non-profit to conduct the fireworks display.
Council has appropriated $25,000 from the 2015 Charitable Gambling Fund budget for this item. However, per Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View Fire Department, due to increases in costs and regulations, the amount required to conduct a comparable fireworks show on July 4 has increased and Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View Fire Department is requesting $30,000 to provide a fireworks show. Sufficient funding exists in the Charitable Gambling Fund to cover this increase.
Recommendation
Staff recommends that Council, by motion, (1) authorize the payment to Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View Fire Department of $30,000 to conduct the 2015 Fourth of July Fireworks Show and (2) amend the 2015 Charitable Gambling Fund Budget by $5,000 to allow for the increased payment to Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View Fire Department.
