Workshop Item: 2 - Jim Kappelhoff, Park and Recreation Director
Title
2012 BLAINE TRIATHLON UPDATE
Background
The Park and Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Engineering, GIS, Public Works, Police and Fire Departments, is prepared and excited to conduct the first ever Blaine Triathlon. Staff will give a brief update to City Council on the event and what to expect on May 19, 2012.
The following are highlights thus far for the triathlon:
· A letter was mailed to all residents within the triathlon area notifying them of a public hearing conducted at the January Park Board Meeting and it was well received by those in attendance (a second letter was mailed May 1st to residents along bike and run legs reminding them of the event).
· The triathlon reached its maximum number of registrations on April 9, 2012 at 229 individual and 74 team participants.
· 40% of participants are Blaine residents.
· Over 20 local businesses and organizations are sponsoring the event through donations and in-kind services.
Staff has prepared a brief power point presentation to give the City Council additonal information for discussion.
DISCUSSION POINT:
Are there any concerns from the City Council regarding the upcoming Blaine Triathlon?
Recommendation
To have staff move forward with the 2012 triathlon and contingent upon its success consider it as an annual event.
