AAA Traffic Safety Grant Check Presentation
end
Executive Summary
The police department was awarded a $1,000 Traffic Safety Grant from AAA to be applied to the cost of purchasing electronic school zone speed limit signs. AAA is presenting the check to the Chief of Police.
Background
The City of Blaine currently has three school zones along 125 Avenue NE. There is a high school, middle school and elementary school all in the same one mile stretch of 125 Avenue located between Hwy 65 and University Avenue. The school zones all have separate signs indicating to the vehicles traveling on the roadway that they have entered a school zone. There is a specific intersection that has no signs showing it is a school zone. The intersection that has no signs allows drivers to enter the school zone unaware that it is an active school zone. Consequently, the police department would like to purchase two 24" x 48" solar powered school zone speed limit signs for this school zone. The signs use solar power to have time activated LED lights that flash to alert the drivers on the road that they have entered an active school zone. The signs cost $1,699.99 dollars each. The police department would collaborate with our City Engineering department to get the signs installed.
Sergeant Nate Hatanpa from the police department applied for the AAA Traffic Safety Grant to off-set the cost of the school zone speed limit signs and was awarded the $1,000 Grant.
