Title
EXTENDING THE INTERNSHIP POSITION WITHIN THE BUILDING DEPARTMENT FOR 2012-2013
Background
The City has the opportunity with our current intern to extend that position for another six (6) months. The addition of the intern has been beneficial in handling the more routine aspects of residential inspections (sheds, pools, fences, decks), plan review, plumbing review and inspection, plus provide additional public counter, phone and scheduling help. This has allowed the remaining inspection staff to focus on the more complex issues/inspections and to catch up a bit as we head into fall. Currently though the Building Department has over 175 new residential permits open (issued but not finaled), with each permit requiring 8-10 separate inspections. This and other ongoing work plus new permits will keep the department busy thru the winter months.
The budget for the six-month extension would not exceed $18,000 based on 32-40 hour week at $18.00 per hour (no benefits). This would remain a temporary position that would end on or about May 1, 2013.
Recommendation
By motion, approve the extension of the internship position in the Building Department.
