Background

At the December 5, 2022 council meeting, Council approved the 2023 Parks Development budget. As part of that budget $850,000 was allocated for the Sunrise Pond Park. The budget includes professional services, design, irrigation, a parking lot, playground equipment and installation of the equipment. This park is located east of Lexington on 131st Avenue NE in the northeast quadrant of the city. The park is part of the Lexington Waters and The Preserve of Lexington Waters development but will serve residents from the following nearby developments as well:

-                     Mill Ponds 1-3

-                     Oakwood Ponds 1-6

-                     Julian Meadows

-                     Woodridge 1 and 2

-                     Lexington Woods

-                     Lexington Cove 1 and 2

Currently, the residents in this quadrant of the city have access to the Sunrise Elementary school playground equipment during non-school hours. With 1100 to 1400 homes planned for this quadrant of the city, this park will be heavily used by the neighboring residents.

Staff will present a preliminary design of the park to the council for feedback and input.

Staff Recommendation

Staff is seeking Council input and direction regarding support for the Sunrise Pond Park concept.
