AUTHORIZE PURCHASE OF ROAD CHEMICALS FOR 2018 IN THE AMOUNT OF $218,720
Background
Each year the City orders road salt (sodium chloride) from the State of Minnesota Cooperative Purchasing program. Compass Minerals was the successful bidder for the State contract this year. The road salt is used to treat our streets to minimize the amount of ice and snow on the roadways to make them safe for travel by the public.
The 2018 price for road salt is $54.68 per ton which is $14.80 (or 27%) less than last years’ price of $69.48. Staff is recommending ordering 4,000 tons of road salt (same amount as the last several years) for a total price of $218,720. The city has the option to increase or decrease our purchase volume by up to 20% while maintaining this price.
Recommendation
By motion, authorize the purchase of 4,000 tons of road salt (sodium chloride) from the State of Minnesota Purchasing program in the amount of $218,720.
