Future Housing Development Discussion

Background

At a recent workshop, the City Council requested to discuss future housing growth/development in the city. Staff will be preparing an educational presentation at the retreat addressing the following topics:

1.)                     Current zoning regulations and process

2.)                     Future land guidance in the 2040 Comprehensive Plan

3.)                     Future growth areas and timetable

4.)                     Examples of recent housing developments (product type, lot size, etc.)

5.)                     Residential land development economics

Based on the presentation, staff would like the City Council to discuss the following:

1.)                     What type of residential development does the City Council want to see in the northeast areas of Blaine as they continue to develop?

2.)                     What type of housing should occur in infill areas (larger parcels amongst already developed areas) particularly west of Highway 65 and/or Radisson Rd.

3.)                     What does the City Council like and not like about recent residential developments?

4.)                     What objectives should the City meet with new housing in Blaine?

The presentation will be made available to the City Council prior to the meeting. Staff encourages members to review the presentation prior to the retreat and be prepared to ask questions as the presentation occurs.

Staff Recommendation

Receive the presentation and be prepared to discuss the questions above.
