Skate Park Discussion

Executive Summary

Over the last several years, City staff and the Park Board Chair have received a number of inquiries about constructing a new skate park in Blaine. As such, the Park Board has recommended moving this forward to the City Council for discussion. Staff is seeking the City Council’s input on the topic.

Background

In 1999, the City of Blaine constructed the first and only skate park in the city at the Blaine Baseball Complex. The cost to construct the park was $46,350. The skate park is a 50’ x 60’ concrete and metal structure. In 2010 Jim Peterson Park off of Radisson Road and Cloud Drive officially opened. As part of the design plans for Jim Peterson Park, an area on the west side of the park was identified for a possible future skate park. The current skate park at the Blaine Baseball Complex is very small and not appealing to skaters and bike riders. Residents are driving to Shoreview, Maple Grove and Elk River to skate at larger, more challenging skate parks. Residents have inquired about the City of Blaine constructing a larger park.

Strategic Plan Relationship

There is currently no direct correlation to the city’s strategic plan.

Financial Impact

This project has not been identified in any of our budgets, and a cost estimate has yet to be developed.

Staff Recommendation

Staff is seeking City Council direction to further explore constructing an additional Skate Park in the city.
